United Kingdom
In the UK, while continuing to strengthen our reputation for trusted, consistent service delivery, we intend to be recognised as a reliable strategic partner for government in the design, build and implementation of world-class public services.
Serco is already a market leader in task management, operational and logistic support to the UK armed services. Since 1964 we have been maintaining the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System at RAF Fylingdales – a contract that was the linchpin for our UK defence business. Today, that business includes helicopter simulator training, support and maintenance for the Joint Service Command & Staff College and, with our partners BNFL and Lockheed Martin, managing the Atomic Weapons Establishment.
After 25 years of providing outsourcing services, our activities now span justice, education, health and local authority services. We are at the forefront in the trend towards private provision of public services through contracts where the outputs – such as service delivery standards – are specified, rather than the exact resources to be used. A rise in government spending designed to improve public services will benefit sectors where we have tremendous strengths and experience. Our work for commercial customers comprises mainly multi-service facilities management contracts for blue-chip clients, including GlaxoSmithKline.
In both road and rail transport our reputation is strong and our expertise diverse. We manage road traffic management and control systems – including England’s national Traffic Control Centre, which we designed and built. And we operate complete rail networks such as the award-winning Docklands Light Railway in London and Manchester’s Metrolink tram system. In July 2003 we began operating the Merseyrail Electrics network and in December 2004 operations began on the Northern Rail franchaise.
With the Fylingdales contract we also established our credentials in science and technology. Today we manage scientific establishments including the National Physical Laboratory, and are a major employer of scientists in the UK.
