In the mountainous surrounds of Hong Kong, road tunnels provide vital commuter links. Each day, more than 90,000 vehicles can pass through the Serco-operated Lion Rock Tunnel
In such a busy system, the safe, smooth-running of the tunnel is down to co-operation and trust

Marine Safety

Serco’s principle marine activities operate in Australia through Defence Maritime Service Pty Ltd, a joint venture with P&O Marine Services and in the UK through Serco Denholm Ltd.

Defence Maritime Services Pty Ltd provides port services to the Royal Australian Navy wherever the Navy has bases in Australia.  These services include refuelling, tugs, lighters and general harbour services.  In addition, the contractor is to supply, and in some cases supply and operate, a wide range of support craft.  These include craft for sail training, diving, naval police, embarked craft on RAN ships, range support, weapons (torpedo) recovery, submarine safety and navigation and seamanship training.

Serco Denholm Ltd provides a range of marine services for the Royal Navy at Devonport, Portsmouth and the Clyde (encompassing both Great Harbour at Greenock and HMNB Clyde on the latter).

Across all these operations we aim to ensure safety at sea, preventing human injury or loss of life and avoiding damage to property or the environment, especially the marine environment.  Our safety system are therefore designed to achieve these objectives by ensuring safe practices in ship operation, providing a safe working environment, establishing safeguards against all identified risks and continuously improving the safety management skills of all personnel both ashore and on board ships. Staff training includes preparing for both safety and environmental emergencies.

These systems ensure compliance with all relevant rules and regulations and take into account the applicable codes, guidelines and standards recommended by the relevant Maritime and Coastguard Agency, classification societies and maritime organisations.

Specifically for Serco Denholm Ltd their safety system has been developed to meet the International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention, known as the International Safety Management (ISM) Code.  It is certified and regularly verified by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, which has issued a document of compliance certifying that Serco Denholm Ltd is capable of complying with the requirements of the ISM Code.
