In a business like ours, with its relatively flat management structure and high degree of autonomy, it is essential that we help our managers acquire real leadership ability - and inspire it in others.
Our high profile initiative in this area is the programme developed in association with the Institute of Directors (IoD). Serco is the first UK listed company to develop a unique personal and professional development programme, which combines the best available external expertise with our own experience and capability. It offers excellence and rigour aligned with our own unique corporate structure, culture and management system.
At the same time, we continue to revise our core skills programme, with refreshed initiatives on the Open Programme. All our workshops are focused on the Serco agenda; they are tailored to reflect our governing principles, our culture, our management practices and our processes.
The IoD / Serco Certificate in Company Direction programme is structured into three modules, which consist of fundamental knowledge believed to be required for an individual to operate at Director level. This covers the Role of the Company and the Director, Law, Strategic Business Direction and Finance. All modules are interactive and facilitated by an IoD tutor, who are experts in their own areas. Each module also involves a key player from across the business to illustrate a Serco slant on the topic.
The Certificate is an accredited qualification on completion of the exam, leading to the Diploma level. The second stage covers Effective Marketing Strategies, People Mean Business, Leading Change and Board Decision Making. The third stage, which can lead to becoming a Chartered Director, requires candidates to demonstrate relevant experience and pass an interview with the IoD.
