National Physical Laboratory

Since 1995, Serco has been the Government's partner managing the National Physical Laboratory, the UK national measurement Institute. NPL employs 600 staff 450 of which are scientists or engineers qualified to degree level or above.

  • Our current 10 year contract to 2014 is valued at £600m
  • NPL is managed under a GOCO.  There is a profit share in place with all profit above 5% shared equally between NPL Management Limited and BIS
  • We have successfully implemented a comprehensive culture change at NPL, introduce a more commercial approach
  • We have increased non-contract income by 100%, increased staff utilisation by 8% and reduced overheads by 30%
  • This has all been achieved while maintaining the scientific reputation of the Laboratory with a 60% increase in peer review papers and a 75% increase in citations
  • The beneficial impact of NPL's work to the economy is estimated at £2Bn pa.
