Using Our Experience To Support Local Students
Following on from the excellent work Northern Rail, DLR and Merseyrail have been doing to promote child safety, Serco launched a Personal Safety Badge for Scouts in December 2008. The badge is designed to educate young people, their families and the wider community about the importance of safety at train stations and the dangers of trespassing on the railway. It was also designed to counter the perception that railway vandalism is a victimless crime, and to illustrate the cost of 13,000 plus incidents each year which add more than 20p on the cost of each rail ticket.
Take up of the badge in December broke all records with 40,000 packs being ordered by Scout leaders, four times the previous record and nearly140,000 Scouts expected to take the course. The scheme was launched Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon who described it as a "brilliant initiative".
