Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital

The new Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital at Colney in Norwich is the largest single-build hospital project in England delivering the latest in patient care facilities through a ground-breaking government sponsored private finance initiative (PFI) scheme.

This £229 million, €344 million, investment in healthcare for Norfolk was designed with input from National Health Service (NHS) Trust staff and built by Octagon Healthcare Limited, a "special purpose vehicle" (S.P.V.) formed specifically to design, build and maintain the campus. Work started on the new hospital in January 1998 and the main construction phase was completed in August of 2001.

The new hospital was completed 20 weeks ahead of schedule and within budget. Approval was given in July 2000 to add an additional 144 beds in two ward blocks to the original plan. The work on the additional ward blocks was completed in August 2002 almost one year after the first completion phase.

All non-clinical services are managed by Serco. This includes building and ground maintenance, energy and utilities, catering, car park management, portering, security, cleaning, laundry, waste disposal and telephones, enabling the Trust to concentrate on its core activity of healthcare delivery.
