IT outsourcing is a controversial area of government outsourcing. IT projects in the public sector are often bigger and more visible than in the private sector, and tend to be more complex as a result. In the UK, a number of high profile contracts have grabbed headlines in recent years, including the Passport Agency, Child Support Agency and Inland Revenue self-assessment system. Given the combination of large-scale projects, new technology and the need to deliver services to a broad range of users that characterise public sector IT contracts, it is not surprising that these projects attract media interest.
