A small number of jurisdictions in the English speaking world - the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom and South Africa - have contracted the management of entire prisons, including custodial services, to private companies. A significant number of independent studies of these prisons have been undertaken in the USA, the UK and Australia. A growing number of countries around the world, including France, Germany and Japan, are now establishing PPPs in prisons, contracting out the management of support services, in some cases including medical and educational support and perimeter guarding.
