Around the world, defence agencies have a long history of contracting with the private sector for the delivery of equipment and support services. And in the USA, the UK, Canada and Australia, defence agencies have once again been at the forefront of the resurgence of public-private partnerships in recent decades. Many programmes and projects have been studied over the years, so that (across the English-speaking world, at least), there is now an extensive literature which looks at procurement practices and performance of competition and contracting in defence.
