In some countries, the private sector (the non-profit sector in particular) has long played a significant role in the provision of education services. But over the past decade there has been a significant increase in the use of private initiative to help deliver education reforms and improvements. In part this has arisen out of a drive for performance improvement. In part it has been a response to demands for greater parental choice. And in some jurisdictions, it has been part of a drive for value-for-money in infrastructure renewal.
