Public Services Industry

The delivery of public services by external providers is not new to the UK. However, the trend has accelerated rapidly since the 1980s when competitive tendering was implemented as a central government policy. As a result a diverse mixture of private, voluntary and independent sector providers deliver a wide range of both front-line and support services. Yet, comprehensive analysis of the sector's size and its contribution to the economy has only recently been undertaken.
