The UK and US public sectors have each experienced ongoing reform to their structure, approach and objectives. The US's pioneering ideas of 'entrepreneurial government' have been hugely influential at home and abroad, but it has been the UK that has been most active in implementing and taking forward public sector reform. Built on an increasingly customer-centric approach, the main goal of reform has been to provide public services which have greater flexibility and are adaptable to individual needs. This shift towards a delivery-based philosophy has resulted in greater use of both the private and voluntary sectors, while private sector methods have also been adopted within the public sector - for example with regard to monitoring. This section is devoted to the experiences of public sector reform mainly from the UK, with some key influential papers from the US.
