We all want to live and work in communities that are clean, green and attractive. Delivering this against challenging social and budgetary pressures requires increasingly innovative approaches. This is what we do best.

Serco's environmental services business has seen extraordinary growth over the last three years. As a next-generation service provider Serco have recognised that it is not enough to simply provide a scheduled service of refuse collection and street sweeping. It is incumbent upon everyone to deliver added value and innovation to the local authorities and engaging with the communities we work within.

Our contracts now extend across 14 local authorities throughout the UK, and cover a range of services including refuse and recycling, streetscene maintenance, landscaping, grounds maintenance, as well as housing repairs and improvements. We also continue to expand our scope of services within the waste management sector, through the introduction of waste treatment and processing opportutnities.

The Story so far...
The origins of the business lie in the mid 1990's were Serco secured contracts with Winchester City Council and Canterbury City Council in the form of traditional outsourcing relationships of three to five years.   Serco worked closely with these customers during this time and has forged good local relationships with customer and community residents alike.   These contracts were re-secured in the early 1990's in the form of new 10-year partnership contracts providing the springboard for the development of the business today.

By carrying out quarterly independent tracker surveys, we are able to monitor the quality of service delivery and deploy resources more effectively for an even better service.

21st Century approach
Technology is also very high on Serco's agenda and we seek to implement state-of-the-art systems and tools wherever this is appropriate in delivering improved service in a more cost effective manner. Our in-cab technology on our fleet of vehicles ensures residents receive the best possible service and the health and safety of operatives and the general public remains embedded in everything we do. Vehicle tracking systems also allow us to eliminate unnecessary journeys, which contributes to the reduction of our carbon footprint.

Communicating your services
The perception of service delivery and awareness of changes to these services is key to ensuring public satisfaction. As a forward-thinking service provider Serco invest our own money in providing communication and promotional advice and support to our local authority customers. We stand side-by-side with all of our customers in delivering communications campaigns including direct mail leaflet drops, advertisement, town centre displays, recycling incentive schemes and other environmental initiatives.
