Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre

Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre (IRC), Bedfordshire, is the main IRC for women and families. It opened in 2001, with Serco operating the contract since April 2007.

The centre holds a maximum of 410 residents, including 304 single women's spaces, 68 family spaces and 38 male spaces.  Rooms in the family unit are twin-bedded and interconnected in pairs to allow families to be located together.  Decency and respect is at the centre of Serco's agenda in looking after residents.

We care for our residents with the support of a variety of specialist and innovative services, including:

  • a comprehensive range of welfare services
  • dedicated healthcare team including GPs, Nurses, Health Visitors, Midwives, Dentists and Counsellors.
  • faith and cultural provision
  • educational and recreational activities

Activities for our residents include; a well-stocked library, an active sports programme, arts and crafts and computer rooms to enable development of IT skills.  The Centre focusses its regime around the promotion of a community atmosphere and many of the services we supply replicate those you would find in any small village, i.e. shop, salon, cafe.

At Yarl's Wood, Serco (an international service company) delivers services on behalf of Home Office Immigration Enforcement.

Since taking over the contract in April 2007, Serco has made many improvements to the Centre, promoting a relaxed, open community atmosphere.

Serco promotes positive relationships with stakeholders across a broad range of statutory and voluntary organisations both locally in Bedfordshire and nationally.  We work with them to deliver quality services which mirror those in the community.

We are subject to scrutiny by a variety of independent bodies, such as the Care Quality Commission, Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons and the Independent Monitoring Board.
