Corporate Responsibility
Serco Integrated Transport plays a vital role in the life of so many people. From MerseyRail, Northern Rail, Metrolink and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in the UK to Metro Service in Denmark, Serco Integrated Transport is about 'getting people to where they need to be.' In its very foundations, transport systems support the local community they serve. These systems have to be safe, and environmentally friendly, but we need to go further; and this is mirrored in Serco's Corporate Responsibility (CR) policies, by providing effort and support to help sustain the environment in which we operate.
CR covers a very broad range of subjects, all designed to embrace the need to be 'socially responsible'. This includes not only fundraising and volunteering, but also includes skills and personal development.
Serco Integrated Transport has an important role to play in fostering good CR initiatives, and this is managed through a network of dedicated CR Champions in each of the contracts. These initiatives range from sponsorship and fundraising, (DLR for example raised money for Help the Aged, and the London Bombings Relief Fund, whilst MerseyRail have been running a year long campaign in support of the 'Stick 'n' Step charity). They also include support for NVQ's, such as at Metrolink, and working with young people on the consequences of railway crime, such as at Northern.
Last years response to the Tsunami in South East Asia was an example of how Serco's Integrated Transport Division can work with other Serco Divisions in support of a larger, Group based initiative. Serco Integrated Transport co-sponsored ten members of staff to work with Habitat for Humanity in Sri Lanka helping build houses for those made homeless by the giant wave. This year Serco Integrated Transport has been actively working with Serco Group to collect blankets and sleeping bags to be sent to Pakistan to help those rendered homeless by the recent earthquake.
