Brief History
Serco has been delivering essential public services for more than 40 years.
Pre 1990
- 1975 - Established a third-party highways technology maintenance business
- 1980 - Set up a third-party urban traffic control technology maintenance business
- 1981 - Delivered the first intelligent transport system in London
- 1987 - Won the UK's first highway incident management system contract
1990s
- 1992 - Won the UK's first National Motorway Communication Systems (NMCS) contract 1993 - Awarded the UK's first national driver information and control system contract (NADICS) for Scotland; and the UK's first fully enabled variable speed limit controlled motorways scheme on the M25
- 1995 - Entered the rail industry with a Railtrack property maintenance contract in the Manchester area
- 1996 - Created Serco Rail Property to deal with the growth in rail property maintenance opportunities
- 1997 - Acquired Railtest, British Rail's infrastructure monitoring division. Business wins included the contract to operate and maintain Docklands Light Railway for seven years, the franchise to operate and maintain Metrolink for 17 years, the UK's first real-time passenger information system contract in Sheffield and our first international intelligent transport system contracts in Sweden and Australia
- 1998 - Created Serco Rail to combine all of our rail activities. We also won our first UK integrated highways and technology maintenance contract
- 1999 - Won the on-going contract to operate and maintain Copenhagen Metro
- 2000 - Won the infrastructure maintenance contract for Midland Mainline, and significant property maintenance contracts in Southern and Anglia zones
- 2001 - Selected by The UK Highways Agency to deliver and operate its NTCC project, for 10 years
- 2003 - Serco/NedRailways awarded Merseyrail, concession for 25 years
- 2004 - Serco/NedRailways awarded Northern Rail franchise from late 2004 to 2013; we were also awarded the Hong Kong TCSS and ESDAL contracts
- 2005 - Serco appointed as the preferred bidder to operate and maintain the Docklands Light Railway
