Intelligent Transport Systems
Serco provides integrated solutions that combine leading edge technologies and transport management strategies with real-world pragmatism.
We are recognised in the UK as the leading developer of traffic management and information systems and for traffic management operations services. We were commissioned by The Highways Agency to implement a £160 million National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC) which collects and manages extensive traffic information on 6,500km of England’s core road network.
Detailed responses to the roads conditions are provided and continually monitored and analysed in order to better manage the network during incident conditions.
We have been awarded the contract to design and maintain the new Control System for The Highways Agency Active Traffic Management project. The aims are to provide:
- Reliable journey times
- Reduce congestion
- Quicker response times to incidents
- Enhanced information to drivers
The Control System incorporates features such as traffic monitoring loops, CCTV cameras, overhead lane-specific signals and variable message signs and operates on a 17km section of the M42 (between Junctions 3A and 7). It has been future proofed to allow expansion both in terms of additional functionality and full-scale national deployment.
All of our asset management systems use predictive techniques that prevent problems emerging, moving the industry away from the current ’find and fix’ mentality.
Sydney Olympic Games - Central Management Computer System
Serco were awarded the contract by the Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales to provide the Central Management Computer System (CMCS) for the Incident Management System (IMS) for the Year 2000 Olympic Games which focused the world’s attention upon Sydney and its transport systems. It incorporates features such as automatic incident detection and response in addition to traffic data collection.
