Barclays Cycle Hire

London's newest public transport system, Barclays Cycle Hire, went live on Friday 30th July 2010 with Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, officially launching the scheme in Jubilee Park on the South Bank.

The scheme, developed and managed by Serco, now has more than 80,000 registered members with around 18,500 journeys a day now being made on the iconic blue bikes. In the first six weeks of its operation, more than 500,000 journeys were made.

The system went live with more than 300 docking stations and 5,000 bikes available to registered users. The bikes are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the scheme will see an increase in capacity with additional docking stations and cycles located across central London over the coming months.

During the first few months of operation, Londoners or visitors to the capital wanting to use the scheme will need to be registered members. This will enable Transport for London and Serco to understand and learn from how members engage with the scheme including patterns of bicycle usage. The scheme will then be opened up to casual users later this year.
