Metrolink

MetrolinkMetrolink is the UK’s first premier light rail system facilitating the Greater Manchester area. The success of Metrolink has been proven with year-on-year increases in passenger figures and ticket sales, not to mention a reputation for being a fast and reliable public transport service into the heart of the Manchester city centre. Metrolink transported 18.7 million passengers to their destinations in 2004.

Expansions and an improvement to the existing system
Phase One of Metrolink began in April 1992 with the introduction of the line from Bury across the City Centre to Altrincham. Rising popularity prompted the necessity for expansion and in 1999 the line connecting Eccles and Salford Quays to the City Centre (Phase 2) was opened. There are future plans in place for further extensions to the system that will link other integral areas of the city and improve the existing system.

Serco hold the operating contract for the Manchester Metrolink until 2014 and work in partnership with and on behalf of our client, the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE).
