Northern Rail
On the 12 December 2004, Serco-NedRailways commenced operations of regional train services across the north of England. The franchise covers the operation of the railway services for the north-west, Yorkshire, Humberside and the north-east of England and contains 472 stations with over 4,700 staff.
With a network which stretches more than 1,600 miles it is one of the longest in Britain, serving a number of major cities including Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield and Sunderland, as well as providing direct access to three National parks: the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors.
Successful partnership
The newly formed joint venture company brings together expert services management, successful operational skill sets, modern, efficient engineering practice and a proven track record of transport integration in an effective combination from parent organisations Serco Group and NedRailways.
The franchise's vision is to "make the local train railway really work for everyone".
