Canadian Defence Contract Awarded

The Canadian Department of National Defence ("DND") has announced that Serco has been awarded a contract to provide Support Services at 5 Wing Goose Bay. The primary role of CFB Goose Bay is flight training by providing facilities for the airforce units from Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

Serco will be providing a full range of services including facilities and utilities management, air traffic control, supply, fire fighting, navigational aids, telecommunications, transportation, billeting, transient aircraft servicing, security and food services.

The contract, which will employ over 300 staff is valued at C$135 million over five years with an option for an additional two years. The contract will start on 1 April 1998 with a transition period, which ends 1 August 1998, when Serco will assume full responsibility for its tasks.

Dr George Gray, Chairman, said, "The award of this contract represents a significant step in the development of Serco's North American business and will establish Serco as a key provider to the DND in its Alternate Service Delivery ("ASD") programme".

DND has concurrently announced that its ASD programme will continue to cover an additional 7 bases over the next 2 years.
