Serco Assurance Sellafield Land Contract
Date : 26 July 2007
Serco Assurance, in technical partnership with Golder Associates, has been awarded a £10m two-year contract to examine and develop plans to clean-up contaminated land at Sellafield.
Under the contract with Sellafield Ltd, Serco Assurance and Golder Associates will examine the levels of contamination in the Separation Area, which has been identified by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority as one of the highest priority areas of Sellafield for clean-up.
The work will include assessment of the condition of the land and groundwater, mathematical modelling, development of a strategy for dealing with the contamination and identifying the technologies and actions needed for clean up.
Chris Theobald, Managing Director, Serco Assurance, said:
“The volume and nature of the historical operations mean that problems with contaminated land at Sellafield are more significant than at other nuclear-licensed sites in the UK.
“The Serco Assurance and Golder Associates team brings world-class experience and expertise of the examination and the planning for clean-up at nuclear sites. We look forward to working in partnership with Sellafield Ltd to start the process of cleaning-up these priority areas on the Sellafield site.”
A study of contamination outside Separation Area was completed by Sellafield Ltd in 2004.
This new contract is a second phase of work, designed to improve understanding of land quality in the area where historical leaks to ground occurred.
