Serco wins Heathrow road traffic control contract
Date : 17 April 2008
Serco has been selected to maintain the road traffic system at Heathrow as part of a three year contract by the airport's operator, BAA.
The deal gives Serco responsibility for maintenance of traffic signals, signal controlled pedestrian crossings, wig-wag signals, traffic count sites and other traffic control equipment at more than 40 sites within the Heathrow perimeter. Adeola Oludemi, facilities manager at BAA, said: "We are excited that this new contract has been awarded to Serco - it is great news for passengers. The contract will help manage traffic flows more effectively and control congestion on the airport's busy roads."
Serco's London operations director, Rob Bourne, said: "The contract covers the entire road traffic system within the perimeter authority of BAA, used by everybody entering or exiting the airport by road.
"It demonstrates Serco's ability to provide clients with a maintenance regime that is more advanced than the traditional reactive/preventative method, which essentially involves responding to faults as they occur. "Our service will focus on availability centred maintenance, where condition and availability of assets and the network health are continually assessed and preventative maintenance is applied. This will offer much improved performance for BAA.
"The new contract further increases Serco's client base in the private sector and extends our road transport capabilities within the London region - and we hope it will open further significant opportunities with BAA."
