Sercos Carbon Management Plan
Transport and travel
Bio-diesel
In 2007, we used over one million litres of bio-diesel to fuel our service fleet resulting in significant carbon savings. In 2008, we have committed to increase the use of bio-diesel across our service fleet, including refuse vehicles and vans.
Business travel
We are committed to reducing our business travel carbon footprint through the use of technology and changes to the way we work. In order for us to achieve this we measure the carbon emissions of each business trip and promote the use of public transport. Each of our contracts and management team have access to range of technologies that limit the need for business travel. Conference call facilities, web conferencing and, at key locations, video conferencing are used to meet this commitment.
Energy efficiency and technology
Serco recognises the importance of energy conservation and understands the role technology can play in reducing utility consumption.
We have implemented a range of energy efficiency technologies both in our own buildings and those of our clients. These include building management system improvements, the introduction of intelligent lighting fixtures, improvements to air conditioning and heating plant and the implementation of waterless urinals to name but a few.
We constantly strive to reduce our and our client's utilities consumption. In 2008 we aim to continue this good work by investing in leading edge technology to significantly reduce our energy consumption requirement and associated carbon footprint.
Contract carbon plans
Each contract within our portfolio has a tailored, measurable contract carbon reduction plan for 2008, designed to reduce our impact on the environment and minimise our carbon footprint. Each plan focuses on specific actions that can be taken by our employees to minimise carbon dioxide emissions resulting directly from our travel requirements, operations and office premises.
Sustainable suppliers
We are proactively working with our suppliers to minimise the carbon footprint of our supply chain. Through a partnership approach with our suppliers we aim to reduce delivery frequencies and associated road travel, utilise low carbon products throughout our business and ensure the requirements of our ethical and sustainable procurement standard are met throughout the supply chain.
Carbon accounts
Each year we aim to have our carbon footprint externally verified by an independent auditor to ensure our carbon footprint is accurate. This gives us and interested parties pace of mind that we are tackling right issues and continually improving our performance in carbon management.
