Corrosion Scientist

Location:   Warrington, Cheshire

Department:   Materials and Components Laboratories, Defence Nuclear Business Group

Salary:   Up to £45k dependent on experience and qualifications 

Technical and Assurance services is a market-leading provider of independent and innovative engineering, environmental, safety and risk management services. Forming part of Serco Group plc, the company works in partnership with a variety of organisations in both the public and private sectors, including the nuclear, defence, utilities and transport industries. 

We are looking for ambitious scientists to join a world class corrosion research team. Our experimental and theoretical research is mainly in support of the nuclear industry. There is a particular emphasis on understanding, predicting and preventing environmentally assisted cracking in safety critical structures. Our corrosion laboratories have an extensive range of modern facilities and our team of scientists and engineers are at the forefront of applied research in this field in the UK. 

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the execution of projects involving both experimental and analytical components. Responsibilities include:

  • Preparation of commercially-costed proposals, definition of technical work activities, supervision and conduct of research programmes.
  • Development of novel experimental or analytical techniques.
  • Presentation of results and conclusions of studies to customers.
  • Publication of appropriate work at external conferences or in technical journals.
  • Operation and development of a small team of engineers and scientists  

Minimum Requirements - Education and Experience 

You should have the following knowledge and experience:

  • A proven track record in corrosion research or plant problem solving.  
  • Experience of stress corrosion cracking and/or corrosion fatigue would be particularly advantageous, as would knowledge of monitoring of corrosion or environmentally assisted cracking using remote techniques or electrochemical methods.
  • An ability to plan and conduct research to meet required technical objectives, to interpret the results in the context of customer needs and to present the conclusions orally and in written reports.
  • Project management experience, from proposal to invoice at both a commercial and technical level.
  • An ability to motivate and develop a team as well as lead research work.
  • Some posts are laboratory based, having a large component of experimental work.  

In addition to several years relevant experience in applied research, ideally you should have a PhD in corrosion or related discipline.

Remuneration

A competitive salary (up to £45k) and remuneration package will be agreed depending on qualifications and experience.
