Independent Nuclear Safety Assessors

Location:  Warrington, Cheshire

Business Area:  Decommissioning and Safety Management, Civil Nuclear Businesses Group

Salary:  £45k to £55k dependent on experience and qualifications

The Role

Serco provides safety assessment and advice in the civil nuclear, nuclear defence, transport, civil defence and homeland security sectors.  There are currently opportunities to provide Independent Nuclear Safety Assessment and advice to clients across the civil nuclear industry.  The role involves:

  • Reviewing documentation advising on technical integrity, accuracy, and nuclear engineering and nuclear safety implications, eg Independent Nuclear Safety Advice (INSA) and Peer Review.
  • Presenting key areas of concern to clients through a variety of formal and informal processes including documentation, presentations, and verbal discussions.
  • Performing engineering design and consultancy in accordance with Serco and project Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality systems.
  • Providing engineering input to all phases of the project lifecycle from concept design through detailed design, construction, commissioning, and operation to decommissioning
  • Representing Serco and its clients at a variety of forums including HAZOPs, Design Review meetings, and safety committees.

Requirements

You will be joining a multidisciplinary team with a balance of age and experience.  You will need to demonstrate sound technical judgement and be capable of working effectively within, and contributing towards, a team based culture to deliver to the Client.  To support the role, you must be innovative and analytical in your approach and will be expected to:

  • Maintain awareness of technical developments, national and international standards, legislative and regulatory requirements, and codes of practice related to the discipline.
  • Maintain a strong technical knowledge of the fundamentals of nuclear engineering and of the principles underpinning nuclear safety.
  • Be conversant with the practical links between nuclear engineering and nuclear safety through tools such as engineering schedules, safety functional requirements, design justifications, and design substantiation.
  • Be fully conversant with current design and assessment methods including analytical tools and the theoretical background for analysis programmes used within the discipline.
  • Be a chartered engineer (preferable but not essential)
You will need to demonstrate experience in the following areas:
  • Review of nuclear plant safety documentation
  • Review of engineering and other technical documentation in support of nuclear safety cases
  • Identification and justification of engineered safety measures

Mobility

Mobility is a fundamental element of consulting and a proportion of time may be needed on Client sites. With this in mind, a full UK driving licence is essential.

Remuneration

A competitive salary (in the range £45k to £55k and remuneration package will be agreed depending on qualifications and experience.
