Senior Materials Consultant
Location: Quedgeley, Gloucester

Salary: £45k to £55k dependent upon skills and experience
The Role
This is an excellent opportunity for a senior materials consultant (or an experienced structural integrity specialist with a strong materials bias) to develop their career within the nuclear power industry.
Serco Technical & Assurance Services is a leading service company supplying technical support and advice to various customers, including clients within the government, defence and private sectors. Within the Power Generation Group we work in several project areas, including support for the build, operation and decommissioning of nuclear power stations.
As part of a group of experienced scientists and engineers you will be contributing to project delivery teams but could also act as the main technical contributor and driver for individual projects in support of safety cases, plant modifications and decommissioning work.
The successful candidate will provide technical consultancy and leadership associated with materials issues in the nuclear industry, with a particular focus on the creep, irradiation, ageing and corrosion degradation of steels and moderator graphite in the power generation sector. The role will involve working closely with other materials specialists and structural integrity engineers on a variety of projects to secure the safe operation of nuclear plant (both existing and new build). The successful candidate may also perform outage support work and root-cause failure investigations requiring travel to sites within the UK.

Responsibilities
- Delivery of fit for purpose technical consultancy (to time, cost, quality and customer satisfaction)
- Development of beneficial customer relationships
- Development of the materials team at Quedgeley, with involvement in the training, development and recruitment of staff
- Development of beneficial links with materials specialists from across Serco and our partner organisations
- Assisting with business development, including managing or contributing to bids
Minimum Requirements and Competencies
- A strong technical background (at least good honours degree level) in the field of metallic materials in relation to component integrity
- Comprehensive knowledge of the materials issues associated with nuclear power generating plant (both high and low temperature)
- Significant experience within the nuclear power generation sector
- The ability to work effectively as team leader, as part of a team, or on own initiative
- Excellent analytical skills and the ability to interpret a variety of technical information
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Effective computer skills
- Strong delivery focus with problem solving ability
- Adaptable and able to work on a variety of projects, prioritising as appropriate
- Ability to obtain security clearance
Desirable Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
- Experience of relevant structural assessment techniques
- Experience of forensic component failure analysis
- Experience of project management and consultancy
- A postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject
- Chartered Engineer status
- Experience of direct client interaction
- A full UK driving licence
Remuneration
A competitive salary (£45k - £55k) and remuneration package will be agreed depending on qualifications and experience.
