Chemical and Nuclear Reconnaissance System (CNRS)

CNRS is a vehicle-mounted system developed for the Royal Air Force (RAF), specifically for rapid monitoring of airfields after an attack, to identify quickly whether chemical agents or radiological activity had been released, and how they might behave.

A key feature of the system is the ability, having identified the presence of potential agents, to determine whether they are in liquid or gaseous form, and thus to project their likely movement across the affected area, so that appropriate precautions can be taken.

This form of attack is rare at the moment, so it is essential that operators are trained in its use in order to be able to respond efficiently when needed. The system has a training mode which enables trainers to specify attack types and locations in the software, so that as the vehicle passes that location, the trainees see the system responding exactly as it would to a real attack.

Serco won a competitive tender to take the prototype through the Assessment phase of the CADMID cycle, then subsequently went on through the Development and Manufacture phases to deliver operating systems to the RAF. Serco is currently providing In Service Support to CNRS.

This is an example of our ability to develop prototype technologies into an integrated working system, within an agreed programme and budget.
