Reactor & Radiation Physics

We have a full range of capabilities for the determination of radiation physics parameters and provision of advice regarding the control of radiation and optimisation of plant. We work with our clients to provide assessments, insights and solutions to technical problems related to the design, operation, optimisation and safety of facilities including nuclear reactors, fuel manufacture and processing facilities, storage facilities, waste management and transport flasks. We have a sizeable team, spread across the UK, with skills in these disciplines that encompass provision of internationally recognised software (as the ANSWERS software Service), technical consultancy, and Independent Nuclear Safety Assessment (INSA). Our technical capabilities lie in the following areas:

  • Provision of high quality reactor and radiation physics software, together with customer support (including training). The codes supplied and marketed include WIMS, MONK, MCBEND, RANKERN, PANTHER and FISPIN and are covered under a separate entry for ANSWERS. Customers include most of the major utilities; mathematical modelling on a bespoke basis is also supplied.
  • Radiation shielding analysis with application of a range of software, including MCBEND, RANKERN and MCNP. As well as the determination of radiological dose rates and shielding optimisation, analyses include nuclear heating, reactor pressure vessel fluence calculations, decommissioning support, sky-shine studies, and support for food irradiation facilities.
  • Criticality operational support, training and broad design and safety analysis/ assessment, including the use of MONK, WIMS, KENO and MCNP.
  • Well logging consultancy using MCBEND to predict the response of logging tools to changes in environment.
  • Reactor Physics consultancy, with application of a range of software, including MONK, WIMS, PANTHER, TRAIL, FISPIN and ERANOS. Assessments include fuel management cycles, steady state reactor operation, operation under non-standard condition and transient analysis.
  • Nuclear data - primarily in support of the ANSWERS suite of software, so as to ensure that they are supported by high quality nuclear data. These skills are also used for nuclear data evaluation and generation of nuclear data libraries.
  • Radionuclide inventory analysis, using codes such as FISPIN, for decommissioning and waste management.
  • INSA, peer review and regulatory support addressing reactor physics, shielding, waste management, ALARP, radiological protection and criticality safety.
