Radiation Services
Serco has widely acknowledged skills in radiological protection, particularly in the field of exposure assessments and consequence analysis. However, consistent with the aim of growing our business and expanding our offerings to clients, we have recently established a Radiation Services capability. In addition to our existing skill base, Serco has recently acquired staff from IRAS, a company with a combined experience of over 40 years in the radiation protection field, to spearhead our move into the Radiation Services sector.
Whilst based on the provision of RPA advice, our Radiation Services offerings are aimed at three distinct market sectors, namely Nuclear Decommissioning, Environmental Assessments including Land Remediation and the non-nuclear "small users" of ionizing radiations. More specifically, our offerings can be summarised as follows:
- The development of novel decommissioning and monitoring techniques including those designed to minimize active waste arisings through effective segregation, therefore maximizing the potential for disposal of bulk materials under "free release" criteria.
- Provision of a complete consultancy and site implementation capability for decommissioning projects, from initial facility shut down, through the demolition process and contaminated land assessment, to the end point including high sensitivity surveys of NORM contaminated land.
- Operational Health Physics support including provision / review of radiation safety documentation required under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 (including Prior Risk Assessments, Critical Examinations, etc).
- The design of dosimetry programmes including procurement of appropriate dosimetry equipment and programme management and implementation. Monitoring capabilities include external dose assessments, air sampling programmes and radon investigations.
- Advice on Sealed Source handling including incident investigations and Leak Testing in accordance with ISO 9978
- Radiation Awareness Training, including a well established Radiation Protection Supervisor training course which has been delivered to over 830 delegates in the past 5 years.
