Engaging our UK supply chain to help minimise waste and avoid waste to landfill

In 2018 we have continued to build momentum behind our commitment to minimise waste and avoid waste to landfill.

We have driven forward our work with ACM Environmental plc, engaged in 2017 to bring innovative and unique solutions to waste management across our UK estate. During the first year of partnership, our waste to landfill dropped from 42% to 0% in all ACM-managed sites, with an associate increase in recycling rates from 25% to 55%. ACM have introduced a broad range of solutions to help us meet the diverse challenges of waste minimisation across our operations, including training for offenders with waste responsibilities in the prisons we manage.

We have also launched a new Supplier Environmental Forum aimed at engaging our suppliers more collaboratively and proactively in delivering our environmental ambitions. For our inaugural event, we invited our main catering and cleaning suppliers to join us for strategy review and formulation of plans for reducing packaging and making waste easier to recycle.

Angela Earl, Senior Category Manager, said: “Serco is committed to limiting the impact of our operations on the environment through more sustainable business practices. Our new Supplier Environmental Forum is a big step forwards, enabling us to work collaboratively with our supply chain to transform the way we use and dispose of plastics.”
