Our people 2018
To celebrate and promote its vibrant diversity, Serco Asia Pacific has introduced an official, Division-wide calendar of events to be observed every year. Recognising key dimensions of diversity, and aligned to relevant international events, the annual schedule allows for local activity but enables a core rhythm of awareness, acceptance and understanding to be driven across the region.
The first Division-wide celebration in the new calendar was ‘Wear it Purple Day’ in August. Around the region, our people wore purple clothing and accessories, proudly demonstrating their support of our LGBT+ community and diversity of choice in sexuality and gender identities. Other activities included group discussion events, bringing our people together to engage around the theme with guest speakers from senior leadership or related communities.
This was followed in December with the United Nations ‘International Day of People with Disability’, for which the 2018 theme was ‘empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality’. Our celebration was organised across Serco sites in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, with our teams arranging various events to mark the occasion, for which many engaged with the wider disabled community in different ways.
Regional events planned for 2019 include International Women’s Day; the Australian celebration of diversity, Harmony Day; NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) Week; and the Australian day of action for mental health, RUOK? Day.
Serco Asia Pacific CEO, Mark Irwin said: “Our challenge is to ensure that our workplaces operate with acknowledgement of our diversity as well as our dynamism. Through our ability to respect and value the unique qualities of our people, we know that the more comfortable they are in their job surroundings, the more likely they are to realise their full potential.”
