Our traffic management team helping the Texas Department of Transportation to improve driver safety

In Texas we operate the Austin District Traffic Management Center (TMC) on behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The TMC is located within the City of Austin’s Combined Transportation and Emergency Communications Center facility, alongside law enforcement and emergency services. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round, serving all state-maintained roadways for 11 counties in Texas, covering 3,447 centerline miles.

Working closely with their co-located colleagues, the responsibilities of our TMC team include:

  • monitoring and managing traffic and roadways;
  • identifying, managing and coordinating response to incidents, including crashes, debris, abandoned or disabled vehicles and hazardous or non-hazardous spills; and
  • managing special situations, such as amber and silver alerts, inclement weather and special events.

In addition to operating the TMC, we also manage the TxDOT Highway Emergency Response Operations (HERO). We maintain a fleet of over 50 vehicles to provide roadside support for incidents impacting the patrolled interstate highways. Since the contract live date in October 2017, our HERO team have patrolled over 1.5 million miles and identified/managed over 38,000 traffic incidents. We have provided over 50,000 services to the motorists involved, including tire changes, fuel provision, jump starts, pushing vehicles out of active travel lanes, water provision for overheating vehicles, escorting motorists off roadways and assisting other first responders at crash scenes.
