Serco Insights: enabling innovative energy efficiency in facilities infrastructure

Across the Middle East, high energy consumption combined with one of the highest carbon footprints in the world and rising energy prices is driving fast-paced innovation for energy efficiency in facilities infrastructure. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), we support our customers by working with them to design and implement a multitude of energy efficiency, water conservation and waste management solutions for their sites where we operate. Our goal is to enable higher resource efficiency and cost savings without compromising on service quality.

One area of focus for us is the improvement of energy efficiency in older buildings through upgrading operational and physical systems and improved maintenance regimes. In the UAE, governmental, commercial and residential buildings account for around 80% of the total electrical energy consumption, but new sustainability regulations typically focus on new construction.

To provide better energy efficiency support and solutions for our customers, we have partnered with a specialist start-up technology company to develop a new ‘Software as a Service’ (SaaS) called Serco Insights.

Serco Insights unlocks the value of ‘trapped data’ in building management systems through machine learning algorithms. By interrogating utility performance data and providing finely detailed but accessible analysis that enables practical action, Serco Insights can identify the most efficient energy consumption settings to meet demand. This also enables a transition from reactive and planned maintenance to predictive maintenance, which improves the lifespan of system components.

Serco Insights has been trialled at several client sites, all with excellent results. For example, at New York University in Abu Dhabi, adjustments to the cooling systems based on analysis of data such as ambient moisture content enabled a reduction in energy consumption equivalent to 3,210,342 kWh over five months, resulting in cost savings of approximately 642,068 AED.
