The best people for the challenges ahead

By any measure, this has been an extraordinary year. Our societies, communities and governments have been radically challenged by the initial wave of Covid-19, which has dominated our work during the first half of 2020. It has changed the way we work, the way we live, and will have profound consequences which cannot yet be fully understood. Our people have risen to the challenges presented to them with commitment, determination and a steadfast belief that providing public services, on which millions of people depend, has never been more important. 

These events have tested Serco people in ways most of us would have thought unimaginable less than 12 months ago. It gives me enormous pride to say my colleagues have passed those tests with flying colours. It has required our people to demonstrate all of our Values – Trust, Care, Innovation and Pride – in equal measure, as they have sought to do the right thing, care for the people in their communities and step up to play a vital role in the response of our governments to the crises around us.  

Again, and on behalf of the entire Serco family, I want to recognise the seven colleagues who tragically lost their lives to Covid-19 in the first half of 2020 – our thoughts continue to be with their families and friends. 

I want to express my gratitude to each and every one of the nearly 60,000 people who work for Serco, for the strength and bravery they have demonstrated – it has been humbling and awe-inspiring to see.  

Through all the challenges we have experienced in the last year, it’s extremely encouraging to be able to report that we’re also making progress in the areas I pledged we would prioritise in our inaugural Serco People Report last year. Our ambitions are framed around four themes: the safety and wellness of our people; greater diversity and inclusion across our businesses; engagement and the experience of our colleagues; and the opportunities and development for our people. Once again, it’s my absolute pleasure to invite you to hear from our people and understand just a few examples of what our people are doing to make a difference, every day, to the way that public services are delivered around the world and, in doing so, improving the lives of citizens, supporting the work of governments and caring for some of the most vulnerable in society. I’m delighted to be able to share their stories with you. 

As I have got to know them better, understand what makes them tick, learned about what they have achieved and witnessed what they do first hand, it confirms my confidence that, as a business, Serco is made up of tens of thousands of great people, bound by a shared set of values, focused on a crystal clear purpose, and who will stand us in great stead for the challenges that lie ahead.
