Rowena Powell, Operations Director

Joining Serco in 2011, Rowena has been part of the incredible growth of Serco’s Citizen Services business - transitioning new business and services whilst leading a large workforce across different locations and contracts. Now as Operations Director, Rowena is responsible for the Federal Government portfolio within our Citizen Services’ business, a portfolio in which graduates will gain experience within the Serco Graduate program.

Why do you choose to work at Serco?

To be part of the journey to shape the future of public services and be involved in the broader business is rewarding in so many ways. The rich diversity of experiences and opportunities, the relationships and networks, collaboration and commitment to sharing knowledge in an entrepreneurial environment makes you realise anything is possible.

What’s the focus of your role? What’s your purpose, what motivates you?

My role covers operations, commercial, strategy and leadership across Federal Government contracts; focusing on strategic growth to shape and transform services and improve the customer and staff experience. Looking at new ways of future service delivery, defining and exploring what market led best practice solutions could look like in the future drives me to do my very best. I know I have the confidence and trust of the business in what I am enabled to achieve and I’m proud of what we do. Making the complex simple in a consistently changing environment is engaging. Working with the people around me to inspire them to be their very best and knowing that my contribution matters motivates me.

How have you developed at Serco? What opportunities have you had?

My career has really thrived here. Serco has invested in my growth through experiences, exposure as a leader, affording me the chance to develop new skills and expand my knowledge while giving me the opportunity of new roles and promotions. From a formal learning perspective, I’ve attended Serco’s global management development program in the UK for which Serco partners with Oxford University’s Said Business School, addressing business administration and management, contract management and leadership. Additionally, I’ve been afforded participation in the Serco AsPac Executive Leadership Program (ELP), that’s given me the opportunity of shadowing an Executive Management Team (EMT) member and 1:1 executive coaching while building relationships with colleagues in other businesses through masterclasses and the opportunity to collectively provide the Asia Pacific Executive team with perspective on strategic issues. And on various occasions I’ve been a mentor to up-and-coming leaders as part of Serco’s structured mentor programs.

Why would you commend Serco to graduates?

If you’re looking for a values-led organisation that operates with absolute integrity and trust, that makes a positive impact in the lives of both its customers and colleagues, that can provide the platform to grow as an individual while offering you extensive opportunities, diverse business, contracts and operations, then Serco is a great choice to springboard your career.
