Remembrance Day Reflections 2024

Published: 11 Nov 2024

At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after four years of relentless warfare. With their armies in retreat and on the brink of collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing the First World War to an end.

Today, on Remembrance Day, we pause to honour the sailors, soldiers, and airmen and women from Australia, New Zealand, and other nations who made the ultimate sacrifice. We also remember those who have served in the past and those who continue to serve both at home and abroad.

At Serco, this day holds special meaning as we proudly employ over 700 Veterans, Reservists, and Defence family members. We are dedicated to growing this number, recognising the exceptional work ethic and strong values they bring. Their contributions significantly enhance our ability to achieve our purpose of impacting a better future.

Our commitment to supporting Veterans includes:

  • Diverse Talent Pipeline: One of the four pillars of our Serco Diversity and Inclusion Strategy is to create a diverse talent pipeline, with the objective to ‘Develop and implement channels to increase Defence Reservist and Veteran participation in business’.
  • Veterans Employer of Choice: In July 2024, Serco was formally recognised by the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) as a Veterans Employer of Choice for our industry best practice program supporting the recruitment and retention of Veterans, Reservists, and Defence spouses and partners.
  • Defence Reserves Supportive Employer Programme: Our support for about 200 Serco colleagues who are also members of the RAN, Army, and RAAF Reserves was recognised by the Department of Defence as a Gold level – Defence Reserves Supportive Employer Programme.
  • Compassionate Leave for Veterans: This year, we introduced compassionate leave for Veterans, allowing colleagues registered in MyHR Online as Veterans to take up to 2 paid compassionate leave days for Veteran compassionate reasons.
  • Prime Minister’s National Veteran Employment Awards: For the fourth year in a row, we’ve been shortlisted as a finalist for the 2024 Prime Minister’s National Veteran Employment Awards in the large firm category.

Lest we forget.
