Serco showcases inmate art as Clarence Gets Creative
Published: 18 Nov 2024
Serco, in partnership with Cassino Art Gallery, is thrilled to announce an upcoming art exhibition titled “Clarence Gets Creative,” featuring artworks produced by inmates from the Clarence Correctional Centre. The exhibition will on display at the Cassino Art Gallery in Casino, NSW, from November 23 until 13 December 2024.
This unique event provides a platform for inmates to showcase their artistic talents, with an opportunity to sell their artwork to the public. The exhibition will feature a diverse collection of paintings with more than 60 works on display, ranging from landscapes to abstracts and a large collection of First Nations art.
Clarence Correctional Centre General Manager Scott Jacques said art practice whilst in custody is a powerful tool for transformation, which helps inmates develop essential life skills and improve their overall well-being.
“Art provides a unique platform for self-reflection and self-discovery, allowing inmates to explore their identities and express themselves in new ways. Engaging in art helps manage emotions like anger, depression, and anxiety, and offers a therapeutic outlet,’ said Mr Jacques.
“I am very proud to see the way the artists inside Clarence Correctional Centre have wholeheartedly embraced this opportunity to display their work in a professional art gallery. By taking up unique opportunities such as these, inmates can transform their artistic talents into a viable career, gaining personal fulfilment whilst also supporting their personal rehabilitation and reintegration journey.”
Both male and female artists from the centre have contributed to the exhibition, including a collaboration piece created by female inmates and female staff who worked together to create a piece that shares the power of inclusivity in custody. There will also be more than 20 First Nations artists represented from a cross section of local nations.
Cassino Art Gallery President Maree Beek said that the gallery is excited to collaborate with the Serco and the Clarence Correctional Centre team to provide this wonderful opportunity for inmates to express their creativity and share their talents with the community.
“This exhibition not only highlights the artistic abilities of the inmates but also fosters a sense of accomplishment and connection with the broader community,” said Ms Beek.
The opening event on November 23, 2024 at 2pm, 148 Barker Street Casino, promises to be a significant occasion, celebrating the creativity and hard work of the participating artists. The public is invited to attend and support the artists by viewing and purchasing their works. Gallery hours are Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 10am to 3pm.
