Acquisition, Procurement and Project Management

Serco has deep expertise in complex maritime project management from design, build, and modifications through to vessel operation and maintenance.

In collaboration with shipbuilders, Serco achieves innovative vessel design, build, and modifications.

Serco coordinates technical inputs, progressing from requirements analysis through design and build management to acceptance. By uniting these processes, we deliver specified vessel performance and the cost and efficiency benefits of integrated design and maintenance planning.

Our total asset management practices align processes, people, and logistics throughout each vessel’s life. We monitor outcomes through the Design Build Operate Maintain (DBOM) cycle, accruing vessel and system knowledge to guide continuous improvements in design and build management, maintenance planning, and logistics support. The result is effective lifecycle management – reduced maintenance costs, efficient operational programming, and optimal vessel reliability.

Combined with our marine, mechanical, and electronic systems support, total asset management ensures our lifecycle support accords with class, regulatory, and performance requirements.

Key Facts

  • Serco is responsible for the design, build, operation and maintenance (DBOM) of the icebreaker Research and Supply Vessel for the Australian Antarctic Division of the Department of the Environment. The new icebreaker will be a state-of-the-art ship that will offer scientists unprecedented and extended access to the Southern Ocean and Antarctica.
  • Under the Vessel Acquisition Program, Serco is responsible for all commercial, technical and management tasks for the design, build, operation and maintenance of vessels for the Royal Australian Navy. This pioneering program began in 2010 and has positioned Serco's defence services as a low cost, reliable supplier of vessels. All vessels have been delivered to the Navy at a fixed price, and all on time or ahead of schedule.
  • Through this programme we have delivered bespoke vessels such as the 83 metre submarine escape gear ship EGS Besant and the 93 metre submarine rescue gear ship RGS Stoker, which are used to support the Navy with submarine rescue. Serco operates and maintains both vessels.
  • Due to the success of the Vessel Acquisition Program, the Navy engaged Serco to design and build the Multi-role Aviation Training Vessel (MATV) Sycamore, which was originally intended to be commissioned through traditional procurement methods.
