Helping to promote industrial and technological progress in the United States at the US Patent and Trademark Office

In North America, we support the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in delivering their mission to ‘promote industrial and technological progress in the United States and strengthen the national economy’.

USPTO is the government agency that grants US patents and registers trademarks. Since 2006, we have performed classification and other analysis service for the USPTO. Our team is responsible for multiple services including Intellectual Property (IP) analysis and classifications that are critical elements in the patent process and public records.

To date, we have processed more than 4,000,000 patent applications, which required our patent classification experts to analyse more than 56,000,000 claims. They accomplished this with a quality measure greater than 95% whilst exceeding timeliness measures by delivering over 99.99% of the applications to the USPTO on-time.

US Congressman Bob Goodlatte, who has visited the facility on multiple occasions, congratulated Serco for their support of the USPTO, saying: “The strength of our economy and American jobs rely on a strong patent system that fosters an environment of innovation. Congratulations to Serco on continuing to help make America more competitive.”

“We take great pride in our work for the USPTO because it promotes innovation and assists the USPTO in achieving their mission of providing timely and high-quality protections to US inventors,” said David Cummins, Senior Vice President, Citizen Services.

In 2019, expert support from our US team was instrumental in securing the opportunity for Serco Europe to provide similar services to European Patent Office.
