Name, Job Title, Years in Serco

Maryam Alsaffar, Head of Revenue Protection

11 years with Serco Middle East

Tell us a little bit about your role?

I work in Serco Middle East’s largest UAE rail contract. In my role as Head of Revenue Protection, I’m responsible for planning and managing strategies to ensure the delivery of safe, reliable, world class excellent customer service whilst also meeting the revenue protection targets.

How do you feel Serco has supported you?

Serco has definitely supported me in achieving my dreams. I was the first Emirati train driver in the Middle East and this is one of the biggest achievements in my career. I couldn’t have done this without Serco’s support and training.

Serco has trained and upskilled me in many ways and that is the reason why I have gotten so far in the railway industry. I was part of Serco’s Al Masar Programme which nurtures high-potential local talent. This is where I gained knowledge on how to operate and manage different departments. Serco was also very supportive while I was doing my Masters.

What makes a good leader?

It is important to always work as a team. I understand the value of coaching and I always try to develop my team’s skills by training and monitoring. It is important to give credit and celebrate the success of the team and individual. I sometimes book a day to just sit in one-to-one settings with my employees so that we can build stronger relationships and develop a culture of trust. A good leader must have a clear vision and be able to communicate it well.

How do you balance work and life responsibilities?

Its important to manage time well and understand priorities. I do work during work hours and family time for when I’m at home.

What has been the highlight of your career?

In my 12 years of being in the railway industry, I have taken on various managerial roles. I’ve worked across several Serco Middle East projects across the GCC, in addition to knowledge transfer programs in the UK. Growth is one of the highlights of my career.

Who inspires you and why?

H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, and ruler of the Emirate of Dubai inspires me. He has always supported Emirati women and that motivates me.

What advice would you give to females who are just starting their careers?

Have a strong vision and stick to it. There are many challenges that you will need to overcome, but you can do that by being true to your vision.

What’s next for you?

My next development goal is to obtain a PhD.
