Name, Job Title, Years in Serco

Mona Althagafi, KSA Country Director, 8 months in Serco

Tell us a little bit about your role.

As the KSA country director, I am responsible for the performance and results of various contracts in the Saudi Arabia, leading large and diverse teams across multiple sites.

Describe your career progression, and what has supported you to progress to a senior leader position?

I started my career managing projects. I created my own personal development plan with clear objectives and actions and it helped me move forward, find new challenges and new opportunities to get the most out of my career.

With continuous feedback from mentors and coaches, I was able to progress in my career and take on more challenging senior roles as well as diversify my experience beyond project management and into more strategic roles.

At Serco, 42% of our Executive Management Team is made up of females – how do you feel the business has supported you?

As many leaders prioritise diversity and inclusion, equality is at the top of Serco’s mind and I am proud to be part of a team that creates an environment where individuals are equally recognised and rewarded for their unique strengths and contributions. Where there is potential, there is always support from all levels of the team. Serco provides many opportunities for women and leadership training is a top priority.

What barriers have you personally faced in your career when progressing into leadership positions, and what advice would you give to others to overcome these?

There are many barriers women face during their career. The most significant barrier that women need to overcome is fear of the uncertain. Sometimes risks need to be taken regardless of the uncertain outcomes.

What makes a good leader?

A good leader is someone who gives employees the opportunity to grow and progress and help them reach their goals.

How do you balance work and life responsibilities?

To maintain a good balance of work and life responsibilities requires constant planning and family support. I try to delegate tasks to family members that are able to handle them. Another thing that helps maintain balance is that we always plan activities that work around all of our schedules.

What has been the highlight of your career?

I think my role at Serco as the KSA country director is a progressive step in my career and I look forward to deliver on the promises that the position requires.

Who inspires you and why?

Successful people who made their way up the ladder on their own inspire me, as they give me the confidence to believe that achieving my goals is possible. I take inspiration from women who paved the way for other women in business. I look forward to continue to inspire the next generation of women in leadership roles.

\What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders in Serco?

My advice to all female leaders is to not be afraid and to venture outside their comfort zone.
