Serco Group plc (Serco), the international service company has signed a new contract to operate and maintain the new Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), a dedicated 11.3km bus corridor, in the city of Indore in the State of Madhya Pradesh in central India.
Serco has been selected for this contract by Atal Indore City Transport Services Ltd. (AICTSL), a special purpose organisation set up to operate and manage the public transport system in the city. AICTSL is jointly owned by the Indore Development Authority and Indore Municipal Corporation.
Under the contract Serco will operate and maintain a fleet of 50 low-floor and air conditioned buses as well as managing the operations control centre and a dedicated depot for the corridor.
Building on Serco's success in delivering world class transport operations in the UK and the Middle East and a presence in India through its Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) operations, this will be the first frontline service that Serco will deliver in India. The contract is valued at approximately £13m for a period of six years from January 2013, when passenger services are planned to commence.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who is currently in India to promote London as the destination of choice for investors and international trade, welcomed the news: "This is another superb example of the mutual benefit of a British firm working in tandem with India to deliver essential services. Serco is to be congratulated. Having demonstrated it can operate complex transport systems in London from the Docklands Light Railway to our innovative Barclays Cycle Hire scheme, I have no doubt Serco will deliver an exceptional new bus service in Indore. In turn, Serco, which is already a large employer in India, will bring a welcome jobs boost to the area."Read more
