Serco in new ten year contract to support two key RAF stations

Date: 24 Feb 2010

Serco Group plc (Serco) has signed a new ten year contract with the Ministry of Defence to deliver essential support services at RAF High Wycombe and RAF Halton, worth up to £100m.

Both stations play a critical role in supporting the operational capability of the Royal Air Force. RAF High Wycombe is the home of Headquarters Air Command, and No. 1, No. 2 and No. 22 Groups, together responsible for air force operations and training around the world. RAF Halton supports the delivery of leadership training to Non-Commissioned Officers, along with basic and specialist training to new RAF recruits.

Serco has been the incumbent service provider at RAF Halton since 1997, and the new contract extends our responsibilities in delivering management, non-aircraft engineering, technical and catering, retail and leisure (CRL) services to RAF High Wycombe.

We will be working with our customer at both sites to deliver improved efficiencies, driven by greater innovation, flexibility and service synergies across the two bases. We will be delivering a wide range of services across both bases, including management and administration support, contingency planning, media services, fire and rescue services, motor transport support, engineering, catering, retail and leisure services and support to accommodation.

As Prime Contractor, we will work in close partnership with ESS Support Services Worldwide (ESS) as our CRL subcontractors, building on their extensive MoD experience, in particular as existing suppliers of similar services at RAF Halton.

Contract signature follows customer confirmation of Serco as the successful bidder in December 2009.
Tom Burnet, Managing Director of Serco's Defence Services business, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for us to further demonstrate our value to UK armed forces in improving operational efficiency and effectiveness. We are very sensitive to the financial and operational challenges facing our defence customers. Wherever we work, our customer commitment combines service excellence with a drive to achieve greater efficiencies and cost savings throughout the life of the contract. To that end, we look forward to working with our RAF colleagues at RAF High Wycombe and at RAF Halton over the next ten years."

The contract, which has a seven year term plus three option years, is scheduled to start on April 1 2010.
