Serco awarded Carbon Trust Standard
Date: 07 Mar 2011
Serco Group plc, the international services company, is pleased to announce the achievement of the Carbon Trust Standard, a certification from the UK's leading organisation supporting businesses to reduce their carbon emissions and save energy.
Based on a rigorous, independent assessment the Carbon Trust Standard recognises businesses that have measured, managed and reduced their carbon emissions year-on-year over a three year period. Since 2008 Serco has reduced its carbon emissions by over 10% relative to turnover and is the 40th member of the FSTE100 to be certified by the Carbon Trust. Achievement of the Carbon Trust Standard demonstrates Serco's ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon emissions. By 2012, Serco aims to reduce relative emissions by a further 5%.
Serco has established electronic-based energy readings and the majority of its consumption is measured through smart meters. Also, the organisation's gas & oil, waste, water and fleet consumption is tracked. It is now implementing more eco-friendly practices in these areas, such as switching to low-wattage lights at its sites and introducing energy-efficient cars into its fleets.
This success and measures being introduced are all part of Serco's commitment to supporting the UK Government's Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) which aims to reduce the carbon emissions of around 5,000 private and public organisations across the UK.
Chief Executive, Christopher Hyman said:
"Achieving the Carbon Trust Standard is fantastic news for Serco and is the result of the hard work and effort over the past few years to reducing the company's carbon footprint. We are strongly committed to delivering sustainable high quality and efficient essential services for our customers around the world."
Harry Morrison, General Manager, the Carbon Trust Standard Company, said:
"We congratulate Serco on their achievement of the Carbon Trust Standard. Today, being a good carbon citizen isn't just about looking good on paper. Achieving the Carbon Trust Standard gives Serco the true emissions data they need to build the appropriate carbon reduction strategies and set the right path."
