HMP Thameside to create 350 new jobs in London

Date: 08 Sep 2011

HMP Thameside, the new prison due to open in South East London next March, is creating 350 much needed jobs in the area. Serco, who will operate the category B prison on behalf of the UK's Ministry of Justice, hopes that many new staff will come from the local communities of Plumstead, Thamesmead, Woolwich and Greenwich.

As well as needing Prison Custody Officers, Serco is recruiting for a wide variety of specialist posts such as: Physical Education Instructors; Catering and Security staff; Chaplains; Administrators; and Drug and Offender Programme and Clerical workers.

Guy Baulf, Director at HMP Thameside said: "This is a unique environment in which to work and while it can be challenging it is also incredibly rewarding. We are looking for people who can help us build a community within a community, and ultimately help reduce reoffending."

Serco will provide training for all new starters. For those in custodial roles this means an intensive, 10-week course which includes training in Control and Restraint. It also involves a two-week placement at one of Serco's other custodial establishments* so new staff have the chance to work alongside experienced employees and put their new knowledge and skills into practice.  Once the prison opens, experienced custodial staff will provide ongoing support to new starters so that they are supervised to carry out the correct procedures.

The new prison will accommodate up to 900 male offenders. Serco's main objective will be to keep all these prisoners safe and secure, and to work with them positively and respectfully in order to help them seek opportunities that will reduce or stop them reoffending.

As well as offering prisoners excellent opportunities to turn their lives around, HMP Thameside will be one of the most technically advanced prisons in the world. It will have, for example: advanced CCTV digital recording and monitoring; the latest drug and contrabands intervention equipment; biometric key vending for staff; and digital telephone monitoring.
