Serco awarded ship management contract by International Nuclear Services
Date: 11 Nov 2011
Serco announces that it has been awarded a contract by International Nuclear Services (INS) , the world's leading shipper of nuclear materials, to become the new ship manager for INS's fleet of specialist nuclear cargo vessels. The announcement follows a competitive tender process for the four year contract.
The contract includes the operation and management of INS vessels on behalf of the Nuclear De-Commissioning Authority and Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd (PNTL) and covers three PNTL vessels, as well as two vessels owned directly by NDA. The contract will commence on 1st April 2012.
The contract will be managed and operated by Marine Services, part of Serco's Defence, Science and Nuclear Division. Serco has extensive experience in the nuclear industry and will establish a base in Barrow-in-Furness, from which it will manage the contract. It will now enter a handover period with the incumbent before the full commencement of the contract in April 2012.
INS is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Nuclear De-Commissioning Authority (NDA) and is a majority shareholder of Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd, which has been operating out of Barrow-in-Furness for over thirty years.
Mark Jervis, Managing Director for INS, said: "Our position as the world's leading shipper of nuclear materials is extremely precious both to our people and our communities, and we look forward to working with Serco to maintain our world class safety and operational record."
Bruce Hope-MacLellan, Managing Director Defence at Serco said: "We are delighted to have won this competition and look forward to the start of the contract next year. It builds on our strong track record of delivering marine services to the Royal Navy and our expertise in the nuclear field. We are committed to the retention of jobs in the Barrow area and we will manage the contract from new offices in the town."
