Date: 03 May 2011
As billions of people all over the world tuned into watch the Royal Wedding, Serco was putting the finishing touches to the Royal Tandem; a Barclays Cycle Hire bike designed especially to mark the marriage of HRH Prince William and Catherine Middleton on 29th April 2011.
The bike was presented to Mayor of London, Boris Johnson by Serco. Boris was extremely excited by the unique concept of a Royal Tandem and thoroughly enjoyed unveiling it to the cameras in Trafalgar Square on the wedding day.
He said: "I am delighted to have this amazing opportunity, on behalf of London, to wish Prince William and Kate Middleton a long, prosperous and joyous life together.
"Today will be a momentous day in history and London is proud to host well-wishers from all over the globe. It is only fitting that we thank the happy couple for shining such a glorious light on our capital with a bespoke gift."
"I look forward to seeing the newlyweds on tandem wheels as they start their new life in Anglesey."
The bike and cartoon animations that accompanied the unveiling in Trafalgar Square we both specially commissioned for the occasion by Serco, TfL and Barclays.
The concept for the design of this bespoke bike was born from the Serco Cycle Hire team as a gift from Boris Johnson and Londoners to the happy couple. Serco manufactured the bike and the royal design, ensuring a bike fit for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Royal Tandem has today been delivered by Serco to Clarence House for the happy couple to enjoy.
