Serco works in Partnership with TfL to Launch Major Eastern Expansion for the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme
Date: 08 Mar 2012
Serco Group plc (Serco), the international service company, has worked with Transport for London (TfL) to today launch a major Eastern expansion to the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme.
Serco is responsible for the design, implementation and on-going operation of the award-winning Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme, and has partnered with TfL to support the scheme's expansion beyond central London across the whole of the Borough of Tower Hamlets. The cycle hire scheme now covers approximately 65km² of the capital, with over 8,000 hire bikes available from 15,000 docking points at hundreds of locations across central and east London.
The second phase launch also sees the intensification of the existing area in central London as well as new docking stations in North Shoreditch in the Borough of Hackney, Camden Town, Canary Wharf and Westfield White City. Altogether 2,300 more bikes and 4,800 extra docking points have been installed across the existing and new area.
The iconic blue bikes have transformed transportation in the capital and are currently used by around 20,000 Londoners and visitors each day. The scheme recently celebrated an impressive operational milestone and reached 10 million cycle hires, just 20 months since the scheme first launched. To date, over 150,000 people have signed up as members of the scheme and between them they have made over 7.8 million hires. Casual users of the scheme have purchased over one million access periods making over 2.2 million journeys since the casual users function became available in December 2010.
Jeremy Stafford, Serco Civil Government's Chief Executive said:
"Serco is proud to support the extension of this popular and innovative cycling service to other parts of the Capital. We are delighted to have reached 10 million hires, and this major operational milestone highlights the continued success of the cycle hire scheme with Londoners and visitors alike."
Serco provides a range of transport solutions across London, where it operates the Docklands Light Railway, the Woolwich Ferry, Blackwall Tunnel under the Thames and maintains traffic signals for TfL.
