Serco to run landscapes and grounds maintenance services for Canterbury District
Date: 22 Jan 2013
Serco Group plc (Serco), the leading environmental service provider, has been reselected to manage the contract to provide landscapes and grounds maintenance services on behalf of Canterbury City Council. Following a competitive tendering process, the contract, which is valued at £24m over eight years, was re-awarded to Serco and will start in April 2013.
Serco's proposal was judged to be the best against the council's criteria of quality and value for money. Under the new contract, Serco will be responsible for maintaining Canterbury's parks environment which is vital in supporting the district's £240m tourism industry. This includes maintenance of; parks, cemeteries, play areas, 2,500 trees, sports pitches and managing the sports booking system which has seen its usage and income increase by 50% over the five last years under Serco. The contract will also include the Council's Dog Warden Service.
The overall aim is to deliver both an enhanced service to the public and greater operational efficiencies internally. Serco has been Canterbury Council's chosen environmental services provider for sixteen years. In a recent independent survey, Serco scored a satisfaction rating of over 91% for its performance as the council's environmental services partner.
Mike Boult, Director, Serco said: "We are delighted to further extend our long-term partnership with Canterbury City Council. Our previous experience in delivering a broad range of environmental services across the district means that we are uniquely placed to understand the importance of maintaining the parks environment for both the local community and the thousands of tourists that visit the city each year. We will continue to work closely with the council to devise the most effective and innovative ways to continue to develop the Canterbury environment".
Executive member for the environment, Cllr Rosemary Doyle, said: "This is an important contract because we want our open spaces to look the best they possibly can. After very careful consideration of the bids, the council decided Serco offered the best value for money and we look forward to continuing to work with them in the years ahead."
This is the fourth significant contract win for Serco Environmental Services in recent months. In 2012, Serco were re-awarded the contact to manage Canterbury City Council's waste, recycling and street cleansing services, and also selected to run environmental services for both Wycombe and Chiltern and Derbyshire Dales councils.
